this is so cute! do you by any chance know what was used for the slinky part? I am trying to create a similar costume and am having trouble finding something that will hold its shape...

Sorry for the delay! We bought several large (14"?) embroidery hoops, unscrewed them and re-screwed them so that the ends connected to each other. Then we wrapped it in silver duct tape for stability and proper color :)

Hi there! I make costumes for my family for Halloween & this year my husband & I are going as slink. I love your costume. Can you tell me how you made the muzzle/mouth & what materials?? Thanks!!

Sure! I used craft foam - not sure if it has a more specific name, but it's about 1/8" thick and comes in sheets that are maybe 14'"x20". I had a friend help bend it into the right shape, then threw some staples in it. I went back and used matching embroidery floss to do an intentional-looking stitch around the edges, and also hot glued in some places(like adding the nose).
We used the same material for the t-rex head too.

How did you attach the embroidery hoops to your costumes? I'm having trouble getting mine to stay. Thanks!

For the front, we made kindof a "backpack" out of felt that held most of the first hoop. For the back, I don't remember exactly but i think it just involved belt loops...

Hi! I am trying to make a rex costume! How did you make the head and what materials did you use?

Great! We used the same kind of craft foam sheets for both costumes. Unfortunately I don't have a pattern or anything, we just experimented with cuts and folds until we got the right shape, then stapled it together. I also went back and stitched the edges with embroidery floss to make sure it wouldn't come apart, plus I thought it looked cute. The jaw was attached with hinges(I think we used brass brads or something like that). Good luck!

Foam is something like this, but it comes in different thicknesses and colors in-store: http://www.joann.com/fibrecraft-2mm-foam-sheets-12pk-multi-color/1960616.html

Both costumes are awesome! I am an elementary teacher and my colleague and I would love to recreate this costume. However, I am not that crafty. I know it is a lot to ask but if you have time would you be able to tell me about the other parts of the costume? You talked about the foam parts and the slinky parts but I am not sure about the other parts. Did you use an orange t-shirt and are the "ears" made out of felt? Where did you purchase the orange shirt? How about the eyes and the eyebrows? Are those felt? About what size diameter are the circles? How did you attach the foam to the shirt? Is that a green belt for the collar or did you make that too?? And I am scared to ask about the feet, how did you make those? Sorry I am not so crafty and need so many details but I love this costume and want to replicate it exactly!! The kids will LOVE IT!! If it is too much I understand but thank you in advance for your help!!

Sorry if this is too late! Let's see..
The shirts were just regular orangey brown t-shirts, I think from Jo-Ann. The sleeves/"ears" were felt that was bought by the yard (maybe used 1.5-2 yards?)
The eyes/eyebrows/tongue were all felt that comes in tons of different colored squares. The collar-belt is felt too, I just made a long strip of it and sewed it to the bottom of the shirt. The eye circles were probably about 6 inches in diameter.
Attaching the foam to the shirt.. that was tricky, but looking at the pictures I think i remember attaching 2 long strips of felt to either side of the mouth, and then i wrapped them around and tied behind my back like an apron. I may have added some stitches and/or safety pins to keep the top of it in place too.
As for the feet, yup, felt too :) If I remember correctly we just cut 2 huge paw-shaped pieces for each foot, sewed them together and turned inside out (like stuffing a pillow), cut a circle on the top, and filled with batting. We wore regular tennis shoes inside the paw. Of course the bottoms got suuuuper dirty walking around in Chicago all night! Couldn't come up with anything better in time though.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

You are wonderful for sharing so much detail and sharing your crafty secrets!! It helped so much! The students are going to love it!!Just out of curiosity did you sew on the ears to the tshirt sleeve and did you close the end of the ear like a pillow case? I sewed the ears to the sleeves but I didn't sew the bottoms of the ears. I was afraid if I tripped or something I wanted to have my hands free to catch myself :) Thanks again I could not have done this without all your details. You are so crafty! I bet you have made some awesome costumes since you made this one four years ago!!

I did sew the sleeves to the shirt and sewed the ends of the ear-sleeves closed so they would have a rounded look, but I cut holes on the undersides so I could use my hands.

Glad to hear it's coming along! I'd love to see how it turns out :)
